The design of the crate bridge is based on an arch, in which the arch follows the moment diagram. The height and width of each of the layers were calculated by taking the shear forces between the different layers into account. By executing a series of tests, the mechanical properties of the crates have been determined. Then the layers were optimized, as these mechanical properties are leading for the design of the bridge. After this had been done, the forces on the structure were recalculated, and were also optimized.
After the full calculation of the arch was finished, the towers had been designed. These towers will be placed on both sides of the arch, in such a way that they support the horizontal forces, which will keep the bridge in its place. The towers are made of crates, filled with bottles and water. A rubber layer is used in between the crates and the concrete slabs of the tower’s foundation to protect the crates from the shear forces and to support more horizontal shear resistance.
